Overview

The Future of DAOs is a foresight report that delves into the present landscape of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, commonly known as DAOs, and investigates their potential future impact by presenting various plausible scenarios for the year 2035. Existing somewhere between an “introduction to” and a “future of” the goal of this report is to help people working at corporations wrap their heads around the phenomenon of DAOs, Web3 technologies, and the socio-cultural philosophies that are underpinning both.

In an attempt to present the report in way that is compelling, unique, and authentic to DAOs, the Future of DAOs report is presented entirely as a Discord server.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering how to say it – DAO rhymes with cow. 🐄

Approach

This research was conducted as part of my fall 2022 semester “Futures Research” class in pursuit of a master’s degree in Foresight from the University of Houston (UH). This project followed the UH Framework Foresight process beginning with a futures research signal scan, analysis of signals into trends, identification of drivers of change, the creation of four plausible scenarios, and an implications analysis based on these scenarios.

The report itself contains a detailed approach in the server’s ┇🎬┇behind-the-scenes channel; and there is also a Miro TalkTrack which walks through the project’s Miro board containing all of the research, analysis, and synthesis. Finally, the approach was thoroughly documented and can be minted on Mirror.

Outcomes

Within the first six months of release over 100 people joined the community to experience the report & contribute to the community. In addition, the Future of DAOs was nominated by University of Houston Foresight program faculty for the 2023 Association of Professional Futurists student awards.
